Energy · SCIENCE EXPLAINER

Harvest better. Store thoughtfully.

The nanoscale in solar cells, batteries and catalysis.

Editorial review: 28 October 2026

The starting point

Controlling interfaces and small structures can facilitate charge transport and modify electrochemical reactions. In catalysis, a high active surface area can make better use of the material.

What we know

A laboratory improvement needs verification under real conditions, stability and scalability. Solar cells, electrodes and catalysts do not all have the same level of maturity. No performance claim is made here for a specific product.

Questions to ask

To compare batteries, consider the useful energy delivered over the system’s lifetime, safety, critical materials and recycling. Higher initial capacity may not compensate for rapid degradation or more resource-intensive manufacturing.
